Ubuntu, Recovery First, and the Future of Online Recovery Coaching with Coacherly

Ubuntu, Recovery First, and the Future of Online Recovery Coaching with Coacherly

I was recently doing some personal development reading when I came across the Southern African philosophy of ubuntu. The term doesn’t translate perfectly into English, but at its core, it means “I am because we are.” It’s the belief that our humanity is deeply tied to the humanity of others—that our well-being and success are inseparable from the well-being and success of those around us.

The concept immediately resonated with me, because at CCAR, our guiding organizational principle has always been Recovery First. Above all, when we make decisions, when we coach recoverees, when we work with colleagues, and when we collaborate with partners, this principle is our compass. Recovery First means that people—not profit, not prestige—are at the center of everything we do.

Expanding Access Through Online Recovery Coaching

Recently, we launched something I’m incredibly excited about—Coacherly, our new online recovery coaching network exclusively for CCAR-designated Recovery Coach Professionals. This platform opens doors for recoverees who might otherwise never have access to a recovery coach—whether because of a lack of local resources, transportation barriers, or simply because the recovery coaching movement hasn’t reached their part of the world yet.

With Coacherly, location no longer has to be a barrier. Recovery coaches and recoverees can now connect anywhere in the world, building relationships and supporting one another in meaningful, personalized ways. Even better, online recovery coaching through Coacherly removes insurance barriers, avoids unnecessary requirements, and offers accessible rates determined by coaches themselves. This means people can connect directly to recovery support without navigating restrictive systems.

Why Online Recovery Coaching Matters Now More Than Ever

I’ll be honest—writing about this fills me with optimism and hope. But as I reflected on the launch of Coacherly, I was reminded that in recovery—and in the larger world—we often face systems and mindsets that build walls instead of bridges. Too often, innovation is locked away, accessible only to a few, when it could be changing lives everywhere.

If we truly want to serve the recovery community, our focus must be on taking down those walls, finding ways to share our tools, and creating space for more people to connect, heal, and thrive. That’s the true power of online recovery coaching—it eliminates geographical limitations and makes help available to anyone, anywhere.

Removing Barriers with Online Recovery Coaching

I’ve always been torn with profiting from something as destructive, deadly, and misunderstood as addiction. However, in a capitalist economy, if there’s an opportunity, there will always be someone ready to claim it—sometimes with the intent to help, and sometimes simply to own it.

In this respect, monopolizing or limiting the ability to share and spread technology that could support recovery worldwide is contrary to ubuntu. The recovery world needs all the help it can get, and online recovery coaching is one of the most promising ways to provide it.

I’ve seen this extensively while working in addiction treatment facilities in Central America. Addiction is still a global epidemic. If the recovery community can’t recognize this and find space for everyone—every coach, every organization, every innovation—then how can we expect the same from others?

Ubuntu and Recovery First in Action

Ubuntu reminds us that recovery—like humanity itself—isn’t about who owns the idea. It’s about how many lives it touches. At CCAR, “Recovery First” means we choose connection over competition, and we’ll continue to stand for collaboration that expands hope and opportunity, wherever in the world it’s needed.

And that’s why Coacherly matters so much. It’s not just a platform—it’s a living expression of ubuntu and Recovery First in action. Through online recovery coaching, we’re building a global network where support is immediate, personal, and free from unnecessary obstacles.

When we choose to share, collaborate, and open doors rather than guard them, we create something far greater than ourselves: a movement that spans continents, cultures, and countless lives touched by recovery. With online recovery coaching, we’re proving that connection can overcome distance, affordability challenges, and outdated systems—one conversation at a time.
